It was a pretty long day, but a good one. The bus ride is about 4 hours each way, a good time to nap or meet your tripmates. The only downside of the tour came on the ride - a 30 minute stop-off at the most overpriced, tourist-rip-off craft center that could have been shortened to 10 minutes. 
The whole Bay experience was good. The boat was about the level I wanted - not too new and...

Took the day trip to Halong Bay from Hanoi. Trip starts at around 8am with drop off around 9pm. 4 hours of actual touring.
Very nice sights. Stops at the fishing village and caves.
Food was great, all staff are very helpful and friendly.
Tour guide Sunny is friendly and knowledgeable.
Boat could have been nicer.

Pick up worked well from our hotel. We did experience a delay because some trippers at another hotel were late appearing. The weather was not great but our guide Lucky spoke English well and was attentive and helpful. The caves were terrific. The buffet lunch was generous and well served. the boat did leak a little --from above and let in some rainwater.

All in all a good experience...
